To celebrate British Science Week, The Ogden Trust and F4S promoted an event to get young people thinking about different careers they could pursue if they studied physics. The event consisted of a suite of webinars in which students heard from role models who have chosen careers in different sectors but involved physics. The aim of the event was for the young people to be inspired so that they would seriously consider pursuing physics in further education and as a career. It also gave them real insight into how to access careers in those industries with the role models explaining the different routes such as university, apprenticeships and professional development.
Each session hosted a variety of different panel speakers who discussed their career journey and highlighted to students what they can accomplish with a career in physics.
For example, students were introduced to careers into various careers that had a focus on sustainability such as geophysics and solar. They learnt about various health sectors opportunities in research and working in a hospital

Research shows that young people are put off by misconceptions about what physics is and therefore do not understand the variety of career paths available to them as a result of studying physics; ( IOP reports (IOP LimitLess, Oct 2021). By holding an online webinar series accessible across the UK, we provide an easy, flexible and free way to break down barriers and allow young people to engage directly with real-life physics role models.
A huge thank you to The Ogden Trust for making this event possible, you can learn more about their projects here.
